Coventry City of Culture

Between May 2021 and April 2022 Coventry has been named Britain’s City of Culture. Every four years a new city is chosen to host incredible events, music, dance, theatre, and large-scale spectacles.

Below is an on-going list of how our children are helping to celebrate in a variety of ways. Some projects were started before May 2021 to help launch the year of fun! Welcome to Coventry

Our first project was to help design and make a new sign for Coventry Train Station. This was a very exciting start to the City of Culture for Sidney Stringer Primary School. We started with a competition to design the letters which are below. These were put forward to our supporting artist ‘Charis’ who is leading this project

After we had designed the letters the children helped to make  blocks of colour, this was through collage and stitching. Now the parts are being put together to make the final sign.

Window Wonderland

Our next project was open to everyone in Coventry and was carefully designed to follow the Covid restrictions. https://coventry2021.co.uk/get-involved/window-wanderland/

Children were asked to make a special display in their window then register them on the City of Culture website so other people could go for their daily walk and look for different window displays.
The children made colourful pictures on the theme of ‘nature’.

In school we painted stripes on to flower pots and filled them with violas! We then hung the pots on the fence facing Primrose Hill Street. So many people have said that the flowers have really brightened the street and we are planning to take this display on by planting some herbs and maybe even some tomatoes and strawberries! 

The ‘Coventry Moves’ Launch Project

For this project our Year 3,4, and 5 children, are designing A4 flags to depict ‘Resilience’.  These will be hung along the streets of Coventry.
