Week beginning 5.2.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading and acting out the story ‘Zog’. They pretended they were at dragon school and learnt how to be a dragon. The children then wrote the beginning, middle and end of a story using story language. In Maths we have been learning how to take away using counters and a number line to count backwards. The children really enjoyed creating crowns and castle pictures in the Creative area this week.

Week beginning 29.1.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been learning about how dinosaurs became extinct. They wrote about the theory they believed and then they did an experiment. The children worked together to make a volcano erupt so that they could see what might have happened to the dinosaurs. Along with this, Reception have been learning about healthy and unhealthy foods. The children wrote a list of their favourite healthy foods and then the foods they like to have as a treat. The Bees and Butterflies also thought about what other things help to keep them healthy suck as drinking water and exercising. In Maths, the children have been learning to double numbers using the Numicon and counters. In the Role Play, Reception have enjoyed looking after the dinosaurs in the hospital.

Week beginning 15.1.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been using non-fiction books to learn information about dinosaurs. In Literacy we wrote the facts we had learnt for each dinosaur. In Maths we have had lots of fun naming and describing 3D shapes. The children carried out an experiment to see which 3D shapes can roll and which cannot. They explained the reason why they believed they did or did not roll. In the creative area the children have been exploring dinosaur skeletons and fossils. They created skeleton pictures using a variety of materials such as pasta, straws and sticks. The children used clay to print dinosaur ‘fossils’ too.

Week beginning 8.1.18

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been introduced to their new topic which is Dinosaurs, Dragons and Castles. The children had a mysterious egg left for them over the holidays. Reception have been guessing what could be inside the egg and looking after it until it hatches. The children have then be recording how the egg changes daily by writing their own diary entries. In Maths, the children have been learning to order numbers to 10 and 20 and then comparing the numbers to each other to describe which are bigger and smaller.

Week beginning 11.12.17

This week the Butterflies and Bees have enjoyed talking all about the snow that we had at the beginning of the week and they spoke about how they built snowmen with their families. In school, the children have been practising their cutting skills by decorating baubles and cutting them out to put on their Christmas trees which they also cut out. In Literacy, Reception have been learning all about the Christmas story and why Christians celebrate Christmas. At the writing table, the children have been learning to write letters.

   

WB 4th December 2017

This week in Reception we have been learning about the story ‘The Stickman’. The children discussed the story and the different seasons they could see in the book. We then talked about the different seasons and wrote about what it is like in each one. In Maths we have been comparing different lengths and using non-standard measures such as cubes to discuss which one is the longest or shortest. The children have loved exploring paints and colour mixing this week to paint pictures of the different seasons too. In our role play area the children have enjoyed exploring wrapping paper and Christmas decorations and using language to describe them.

WB: 27th November 2017

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story ‘The Gruffalo’ in Literacy. The children drew pictures of the Gruffalo and then described him. They also thought about questions they could ask the Gruffalo and they wrote them down. Reception enjoyed making Gruffalo crumble this week and they said it tasted yummy! In Maths the children have been learning about money and how we use it to buy items.

   

Week beginning 20.11.17

This week in Reception we have been continuing their learning about Space. The children have been reading the story ‘Aliens love underpants’. They really enjoyed discussing what happened in the story. We decorated our own pants and designed our own aliens using a range of collage material and crayons. In Literacy we then wrote about the pants and aliens we had created. In Maths the children have been learning how to take away using objects.

Week Beginning 13.11.17

This week in Reception we have been learning all about Space. The children had a visit from ‘Mad Science’ on Monday to learn information about Space. The children then had a go at doing an experiment which was to join Lego together wearing space gloves. In Maths, the Bees and Butterflies have been learning to find one less than a number using counters and the number line. The children have also been very creative this week as they made pictures of rockets and the moon which they then wrote about.

    

Week beginning 6.11.17

This week Reception have been learning to retell another story ‘Can’t you sleep little bear?’. In Maths we have been comparing different heights and using the words ‘tallest’ and ‘shortest’ and using cubes as a non-standard measure to compare heights. In literacy we have been learning how to orally retell the story and use the sounds we have learnt in phonics to write a caption to describe the bears. We have also been investigating how different materials reflect light using torches and a range of different materials in our investigation area. In the creative area we have made and decorated lanterns.

  

Shared Reading - Friday 3rd November 2017

Reception had their first Shared Reading session last week and it was a huge success. It was great to see lots of parents and the children loved having their family there to read with them. We look forward to seeing you again every Friday afternoon.

      

Autumn Walk 11.10.17

This week Reception went on an Autumn walk. Children looked to see whether they could find any signs of Autumn. They found and collected yellow and orange crispy leaves and they felt the cool Autumn wind blowing. Along with this, they also looked to see whether they could find any animals getting ready for Winter.

                                

Week beginning 30.10.17

This week Reception have been learning to retell the story of the Little Red Hen in Literacy. The children used actions to tell the story. After, they learnt how to make bread and then the Bees and Butterflies made bread which they took home with them to enjoy. In maths, the children have been learning to add using counters and the number line. Reception have also enjoyed learning all about Bonfire Night and the children made their own firework pictures by mixing paint in a salad spinner. Their work looked fantastic!

Week beginning 9.10.17

This week the Bees and Butterflies have been reading the story, ‘Hoot’ and learning how to describe and compare the characters. In Maths we have been learning about repeating patterns using shapes and colours to create and continue patterns. In phonics we are continuing to learn sounds, this week we learnt c, k, u, b. We have also been trying to blend sounds together to begin to read simple words such as mat, pot and dog. In the creative area we have been using playdough and clay to mould the shape of an owl from our story Hoot.
